Home Search Thoroughbred Injury Management
The major focus of my work is Thoroughbred Injury Management. A major limiting factor on racing performance is PAIN. 99% of the racehorses I see are in pain of some description...... some more, some less. I believe in order for these animals to function like an athlete then they need to be treated like one.
A great deal of racehorses I treat show marked improvement from just 1 treatment and once problems are identified on a horse by horse basis appropriate measures can be put in place to manage injuries and maximise performance.
There are a wide range of factors affecting performance in thoroughbred racing including training factors, animal health and injury status and race day factors that are often beyond human control. The aims of my work are to make sure the horses are healthy & feeling 100%.
My work with the thoroughbreds revolves not just around the treatment of individual animals, but also as an animal health advisory role to trainers to help maximise performance of their animals.
I refer cases in my care to general practice Equine Veterinarians where appropriate for such procedures as joint injections, nerve blocks, scoping, radiography (X rays) and Scintigraphy (bone scanning).
My work is akin to a physio/club doctor in a professional sporting team.
Home Finance Equine Sports Injury Management
Injury management is pivotal to obtaining maximal performance in any Equine athletic pursuit and subsequently I have clients involved in such activities as Harness Racing, Endurance Riding & Showjumping.
For best results and return to maximal performance, I believe injuries are best identified early on in the process, appropriate management and intervention employed and then the appropriate rest interval prescribed. Many horses I see spelled with an injury without treatment return to work with the same injury.
One general rule I go by is the lower down the body (tendons, joints, feet) the injury the more obvious the problem is because there is most often an associated lameness. The higher up the injury (backs, pelvis, muscle tears, etc) often the less obvious the problem is, and these injuries represent a 'hidden' cause of poor performance and musculoskeletal based pain.
As a general rule, the lower down the injury the more appropriate it is to contact your local Veterinarian, the higher up the problem the more likely it is I will be able to assist you.
